Elmer McCollum

Elmer Verner McCollum (* 3. März 1879 bei Fort Scott, Kansas; † 15. November 1967 in Baltimore, Maryland) war ein US-amerikanischer Biochemiker.

Leben und Werk

McCollum studierte an der University of Kansas. Er wurde an der Yale University promoviert; danach arbeitete er an der University of Wisconsin. Ab 1917 war er Professor an der Johns Hopkins University.

Er entdeckte mehrere Vitamine, so 1897 zusammen mit Marguerite Davis das Vitamin B₁. Retinol entdeckte er 1913 ebenfalls zusammen mit Marguerite Davis.

Die Bezeichnung der Vitamine mit Großbuchstaben des Alphabets führte er 1916 ein.
