Blackheath Beds is an informal formation name. Lessness Shell Bed (Sparnacian) is within the lower sandy Abbey Wood Member of the Blackheath Beds. JA: assigned to the early Ypresian and Hooker zone PE III by Hooker 2007 from the lower sandy member Cooper doesn't specify the level at Abbey Wood from which his fossils were found. He calls the unit London Clay and gives the age as Sparnacian-Ypresian, based on the fossils.

The unit is divisible into an upper part whose base is conglomeratic ("Conglomerat a Coryphodon") and a lower part with concretionary limestone and "Paludina" aspersa. The lower part may be equivalent to the Calcaire de Rilly, which overlies the Sables de Berru and like them belongs to the Sphaerochara edda charophyte zone (Riveline 1984 : 134). Except for the Coryphodon, it is not known in which level or levels the mammals occur, as they were found in quarry spoil (Louis et al. 1983). MNHN Some reworking
