Papio (Cercopithecidae)



Papio ist eine Primatengattung innerhalb der Familie Cercopithecidae, deren 16 Mitglieder ab dem frühen Pliozän lebten, das vor ungefähr 5,333 Millionen Jahren begann und bis vor vor 2,588 Millionen Jahren andauerte. Viele Überreste wurden in Tansania gefunden.

Die meisen Fossilien von Pavianen werden heute in Ostafrika gefunden, und zwar im Zuge von Ausgrabungen auf der Suche nach fossilen Menschen (Homo)

Basierend auf den Fossilien glaubt man, dass die Primatengattung Papio Früchte- und Blätterfresser waren. Ihr Leben verbrachen die Tiere vermutlich in den Bäumen (arboreal), wo sie auch ihre Nahrung fanden.
