Theropithecus (Cercopithecidae)
Theropithecus ist eine Primatengattung innerhalb der Familie Cercopithecidae, deren 7 Mitglieder ab dem frühen Pliozän lebten, das vor ungefähr 5,333 Millionen Jahren begann und bis vor vor 2,588 Millionen Jahren andauerte. Viele Überreste wurden in Kenia gefunden.
Theropithecus ist der Gattungsname einer Reihe von ausgestorbenen und einer lebenden Primatenart (T. gelada) aus der Unterfamilie Cercopithecinae, Tribus Papionini, Subtribus Papionina (Familie Cercopithecidae, Überfamilie Cercopithecoidea, Catarrhini).
Theropithecus gelada aus dem äthiopischen Hochland ist der einzige lebende Vertreter einer Gruppe von Pavianen, die während des Pliozäns und Pleistozäns viel erfolgreicher und weiter verbreitet waren. Sie waren ziemlich zahlreich in Afrika und anscheinend erstreckte sich ihr Verbreitungsgebiet bis nach Indien.
Die Pavian-ähnlichen Theropithecus haben lange Vorderbeine und kurze Phalangen (Finger- und Zehenglieder), was auf terrestrische Vierbeinigkeit (Quadrupedalismus) hinweist. Die ausgestorbenen Arten scheinen die gleichen Proportionen bei den Fingern aufzuweisen, wie die heutigen Dscheladas. Im Vergleich zur Größe des Zeigefingers haben Dscheladas relativ lange Daumen, was darauf hinweist, dass auch ihre ausgestorbenen Verwandten die Nahrung abpflückten und mit der Hand zum Mund führten. Die ausgestorbenen Arten sind in der Regel viel größer als die heute lebende Art und zeigen viel extremere Zahn-, Schädel- und Skelettspezialisierungen.
